Somaliland Political analysis
Somaliland: a stable democracy in Africa!
Recognition

On June 26th 1960 Somaliland protectorate gained independence from Britain. A week later it joined Somalia the former Italian colony. This merger lasted for 30 years.

After Somaliland reclaimed it’s independence on may 1991 despite it’s many achievements it has continuously suffered an image deficit due to the shadow of Somalia a country that only exists on paper. The world must know that Somaliland is a country free from war, oppression and dictatorship. It has de facto governance and to achieve de jure status must overcome the apathy of the international community.

The Somaliland government has been recently stepping up the recognition campaign among fellow African countries. South Africa is well known to be sympathetic to Somaliland successes. Ethiopia already a strategic ally is the only country that has upgraded its Hargeisa representative to the level of Ambassador. In 2005 Somaliland formally applied to become a member of the AU. Elsewhere, Somaliland parliamentarians headed by the speaker of the house A Cirro received a standing ovation at the Welsh Assembly in the United Kingdom.

Early 2007 Kenya’s parliamentarians visited Somaliland both houses of parliament. At the last African Union Summit in Addis, Rwanda has put the Somaliland issue to the table. Somaliland president was also invited and attended Ghana’s 50th anniversary of independence. Finally 14 members of the latter country returned the favor by taking part in the 16th Anniversary of Somaliland Independence.

As-Salaam Alaikum:

I disheartened by the aspirations of independence of Somaliland. I feel that Somalia and Somaliland are one. I can accept that you being autonomous from Somalia, but I can accept total independence. Why do you need to be totally independent from Somalia. You can run your affairs while being apart of Somalia. Have total control of your governmental affairs while maintaining the Somali identity. I think your being mean. Both you and I speak one language, granted different dialect, but one language. We have quite a long history. Just because the English colonized you and the Italians colonized me, doesn’t mean we are one. You shouldn’t fall into colonization mentality. The Europeans want us to divide. I envy how you the north functions well. I wish we in the south could fall the same way. Don’t give up hope. When Somaliland joined Somalia, it was for a reason. Remember the people who agreed to join did it because they believed that we are one. Don’t run when the bad gets going. We are all muslims and I pray that the Somalia I was born in will come back together. Please brothers and sisters of the north don’t abandon the dreams and aspiration the forefathers of both the north and south had tried when they joined Somaliland and Somalia together.

As-Salaam Alaikum

Oct 29 2008 is a day that will remain as the day of infamy.A day where the terrorist from Somalia showed their true colours:1) They don’t understand Islam or else would they kill innocent muslim civilians in a cowardly manner without regard to the universal rules of engagement of war? .2)they are being used by arabs and other foreigners and they don’t even know it.3) they are not showing repentance for what they did in 1988-91 let alone what they have done now 4)They dont even recognize Somaliland and envy our peace.
Their objective is to break the spirit of our nation but have only succeeded in exposing our resolve and the unity of our people. In the past i have seen a lot of goodwill and kindness from Somalilanders towards people from Somalia. It’s time we only welcome those who mean no harm(displaced women& IDPS;children)…Nobody can stop the valiant people of Somaliland,Somalia to have peace must quickly consider the recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty within the framework of a two state solution.

Hello every body,

With this comment, i would like to give a response to tahalil’s comment.

But before all, i apologize on my english because i really don’t speak as fluent as i want it. So i hope these langage error could not spoil the reading for you.

Now, if i can give my opinion about the decision of SOMALILAND people to secede from the rest of Somalia, it could be everything except a sentimental issue as you presented here.

SOMALILAND is a hopeful model of society, based on a modern democracy mixed with a pastoral rules and its way of life. SOMALILAND is also an unrecognised state with no help from nowhere. This state exists after the will of ALLAH soubxanaho waa tacalaa, only because the people want to build this state and they are ready to do for any effort and sacrifice to achieve their will.

So, you can’t compare the separation of SOMALILAND and SOMALIA like when you leave your girlfriend or your wife. In my mind, this people ( SOMALILAND people ) have tried the union solution to build a great Somalia but this solution has gravely failed.

So why you ( the south people ) don’t let this people to try the other solution, i mean the solution of two separate states and two separate destiny

Waa xabi yalaaho wa niqmaal wakiil

I think the problem is that the people of Somalia don’t understand what we went through as Somalilanders and how we overcame all the obstacles because we have elders that guide us in wisdom which they don’t have. Also we have a lot of “aoulyos” and we respect our belief in god and our religion which is ISLAM.
THEY HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE THEY GET PEACE.
